About Umesh Korram
Umesh Korram is a student activist and leader known for his advocacy for the rights of Other Backward Classes (OBC) students and marginalized communities in India. He holds various leadership positions and actively works towards educational equity and social justice.
Key Contributions:
Advocacy for OBC Student Rights: Korram is a prominent voice for students preparing for competitive exams like the UPSC, MPSC, and other government exams. He has been instrumental in advocating for increased foreign scholarship opportunities for marginalized students, including OBCs, SCs, and STs.
Securing OBC Hostels: He spearheaded the movement for separate hostels for OBC students in Maharashtra, a significant achievement in the state's history. While 72 hostels were established, Korram envisions a network of 720 hostels to accommodate the large OBC population in the state.
Opposition to Privatization: Korram actively opposes the privatization of government services and contract-based employment, emphasizing the need for job security for the common man. He has led numerous protests against these policies.
Establishment of Student Rights Foundation (SRF): Korram founded the SRF, an
organization dedicated to assisting students and advocating for their rights.
Role in Mahajyoti Foundation: He played a crucial role in the establishment of the
Mahajyoti - Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Research and Training Institute, an autonomous
institute of the Other Backward Class Bahujan Welfare Department, Government of
Maharashtra. Mahajyoti provides numerous benefits to OBC, SBC, VJ, and NT students
from Maharashtra, including coaching for NEET, JEE, MH CET, UPSC, MPSC,
banking, defense, and higher education exams, as well as fellowships for Ph.D.
scholars. Korram continues to advocate for increased seats, stipends, and other
necessary support for students at Mahajyoti.
Other Initiatives:
Walking Buddha Foundation: Korram founded the Walking Buddha Foundation,
which focuses on policy research and development to improve government policies for
the betterment of society.
Baliraja Club: He established the Baliraja Club, dedicated to cultural development,
agriculture, and farmer welfare. The name "Baliraja" honors farmers who provide
sustenance for society.
Academic Pursuits:
Korram is pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Local Self-Government from the Department of Public Administration, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, one of the first such departments in India. His research topic, "Exploring the Impact of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Research and Training Institute, Pune and Tribal Research Training Institute, Pune in the Social Justice of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes," reflects his commitment to social justice.
